The Ocean City Reef Foundation is a nonprofit organization that was created in 1997 when the Maryland Department of Natural Resources decided to terminate the state of Maryland’s Reef Program. Forty subway cars were sunk in May 2008 on Jackspot Reef thanks to a partnership between the Maryland Artificial Reef Initiative, the Ocean City Reef Foundation, New York City Transit Authority and the town of Ocean City. These recycled materials enhance both the habitat for sea life and value as a recreational fishing and diving destination. The Ocean City Reef Foundation has acquired 80 truckloads of the concrete pipes and they will eventually find their way to the ocean floor on the foundation’s permitted artificial reef sites. The Ocean Reef Community Foundation’s annual grants program is providing more than $1.4 million to nonprofit organizations serving neighboring areas this year thanks to the Ocean Reef community’s generous participation in the 2020 All Charities effort.
